October 14 2023 – Annular Eclipse

From the Adirondack Sky Center and Observatory
October Annular Partial Eclipse – getting us ready for April 2024
The Adirondack Sky Center’s Observatory will be open for the October 14th annular solar eclipse starting at noon with astronomers and solar telescopes available. In Tupper Lake about 20 percent of the Sun’s disk is covered by the moon.
The eclipse on Saturday, Oct. 14, 2023, will be an annular solar eclipse. An annular solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth while it is at its farthest point from Earth. Because the Moon is farther away from Earth, it appears smaller than the Sun and does not completely cover the star.
During an annular eclipse, it is never safe to look directly at the Sun without specialized eye protection designed for solar viewing. Review these safety guidelines to prepare for Oct. 14, 2023.
