Homeschool Family Camp

It’s that time of year again! The annual Homeschool Family Camp on Upper Saranac Lake at Camp Cherokee returns August 20th – 25th, 2023!

This is a week filled with fun and adventure & making new friends and memories.

There are motorboats with tubing, water skiing, etc…, a pool with lifeguard, horseback riding, ping pong, archery, yard games, basketball, pickleball, volleyball, playground area, chapel time, pontoon boat, kayaks, canoes, and more! We typically have a fire at least once during the week with s’mores and take the pontoon boat out to star gaze when it gets dark. This is a great opportunity for families to spend quality time together and connect with other homeschoolers in our region.

DATES: Sunday August 20th (dinner time) through Friday August 25th (morning)

LOCATION: Camp Cherokee 433 Gilpin Bay Saranac Lake

COST: $535/family (NOT per person) for the week. Plus a meal for everyone including staff. If you are new Tammy would be delighted to help you with this and you will have a helper family that knows the kitchen working with your family. Additional adult (often a grandparent) costs $146 for the week. $100 deposits are being collected to help determine number of families planning on attending.

EXTRA DETAILS: Kitchen is vegetarian; hence, no meat. Every family supplies a meal – so food is mostly covered. You can put the food you bring in the main kitchen where there is a walk-in fridge and area to store food. (You may also want to bring extra snacks for your family in a plastic container if you store where you sleep or you can store anything you want in the kitchen – please label for food if you do not want anyone else using it). Each family will also be a helper family at another meal. You may want to bring goodies for S’mores.

Sunday night’s pot luck dinner, on your own or we order pizza (everyone splits the cost). Depending on the number of families, Tammy may ask everyone to contribute something towards a breakfast (box of cereal or gallon of milk) and help cleaning up for one extra meal. In the past, people have been incredibly helpful so clean-up is pretty easy with all the hands at work.

Due to allergies, we have only allowed peanut butter in the kitchen and asked that an adult makes the sandwich, then they watch the child while they eat it. Afterwards, please wash everyone’s hands. If you have other allergy concerns, or this policy is not acceptable, please notify me and we will work together to insure everyone is safe!

Cabins will be assigned ahead of time so you will know what beds or bunks you will have and you bring your own bedding and towels.

Bring your favorite board game – kids love to play games together in the cafeteria on rainy days or in the evening.

If you would like to organize a “class” or “meeting”, just let Tammy know and we will add it to our schedule. In the past we have had photography, cake decorating, men prayer time, and homeschool sharing time to give you an idea. The last few years, we have been small and not done the extra classes.

We often have talent night which is a great time – it’s optional; but fun to plan something for!

Feel free to contact Tammy Neureuther (tamneureuther@yahoo.com) or Casey Ford (caseylynnford@gmail.com) directly for additional questions or to sign up.

The Adirondack Youth Choir will be similar to the former Adirondack Children’s Chorus which Barbara Tagg directed in Saranac Lake for approximately 20 years at the Adirondack Festival of American Music in Saranac Lake, NY. She has been a summer resident of the Adirondacks since she was a child and is nationally and internationally recognized for her work in the choral field. As founder and artistic director of the Syracuse Children’s Chorus for 30 years, she was a national leader in the development of the American children’s choir movement, and her choirs have sung across the US, in Canada, the Far East, and Europe. The former Syracuse University music education faculty member and Women’s Choir conductor is currently Florida Chair of Women’s Choirs for the American Choral Directors Association, active on two committees for Chorus America, and judges choir festivals for WorldStrides. Author of Before the Singing, published by Oxford University Press, and numerous articles, Dr. Tagg is known for her commitment to quality music, excellence in singing, and diverse repertoire. This summer’s program will be a tribute to the rich history of summer music in Saranac Lake.
