Adirondack Center for Writing’s Programs for Young Writers

Below are four ways your students can benefit from Adirondack Center for Writing’s 2023-2024 programs for students (homeschoolers welcome). Feel free to reach me (Tyler Barton, Programs Manager) with questions about any of these items or for requests to visit ACW (or have ACW visit your school).

1. YA author, NEAL SHUSTERMAN, is visiting Saranac Lake on Friday, September 22nd at 9:30 AM. This event is free, but registration is required. Learn more about Shusterman, author of the beloved Arc of a Scythe series, here.

2. Our annual HIGH SCHOOL WRITING RETREAT will take place on Thursday and Friday, November 2 + 3 from 9 – 3 each day at Paul Smith’s College. This is an opportunity for students in grades 9 – 12 to work with professional performance poets to write new work, practice reading aloud, and build community with other teenage writers from around the Adirondacks. This event is free, but registration is required. Instructors include Jon Sands and Jose Olivarez

3. The 2024 WILD WORDS Teen Writing Anthology for kids ages 13 – 19 will open for submissions on September 18th. Submissions must be received before the deadline of February 29, 2024. If you have students who write fiction, poetry, essays in any genre, encourage them to submit their work. Learn more about Wild Words here

4. ACW is available for both SCHOOL GROUP VISITS to our center in Saranac Lake as well as visits to your school. Tyler is an author and former high school teacher with more than a decade of experience leading writing workshops for students of all ages on a range of subjects. We can create a lesson to fit whatever topic you’re studying. Rates for visits vary, but we’re always willing to work within your school’s budget. Simply email Tyler to discuss options at any time.

As always, Adirondack Center for Writing is here to be a resource for your classroom’s exploration of writing, reading, and storytelling. Reach us here anytime to discuss ways we might be able to help inspire your students.

Sincerely,

Tyler Barton & Nathalie Thill
