From NY News Publishers Association: The Law Day 2024 theme is “Voices of Democracy.”The theme recognizes that in democracies, the people rule. For nearly 250 years, Americans have expressed their political views and wishes by speaking their minds and voting in elections. This contest seeks to amplify student voice on the importance of the First Amendment and the right to vote. To encourage the VOICES of the next generation of voters, we developed a Student video contest.
Make a video that creatively expresses the importance of accurate, reliable information as the United States approaches the election this fall. Use your voice to inspire others to cherish and exercise the right to vote as knowledgeable, informed citizens
Homeschool History Day will be held on Tuesday, June 4th, from 9am-3pm, at John Brown Farm State Historic Site in Lake Placid.
**Please RSVP to sunitahalasz@gmail.com by May 4th with the number of children and adults you’ll bring.**
Scroll down to see the full day’s schedule. There is a suggested donation of $5/family to the two organizations that will be hosting us: John Brown Farm State Historic Site (donations processed through NY Natural Heritage Trust), and historic site friends group John Brown Lives!
History Day is a very inclusive event! All ages are welcome to give a presentation on a history topic of their choice. Kids dress up as the person, place, or thing they have researched. Parents are welcome to join their student on stage.
In previous years, we have had parents be interviewers to help prompt their kids; one time a parent read a story about their child’s topic while their student stood nearby; we’ve had a group of siblings go up together and share their presentation; and of course students also go up on their own. Every method of sharing your learning is welcomed and applauded!
Kids are not required to do a presentation. The role of audience member is equally important!
We’ll all be working together to make a Recycled Reading Rug throughout the day at History Day. This is a project of John Brown Lives!, the friend group of John Brown Farm. This rug will be donated to the Lake Placid Library Children’s Room for all of us to enjoy sitting on when we visit the library for Homeschool Thursdays. Here is a bit of background about the weaving project from the John Brown Lives! end-of-year report. If you have cotton t-shirts to donate in advance of History Day, please give them to a member of North Country Climate Club who is collecting them!
