The Adirondack Youth Choir will be similar to the former Adirondack Children’s Chorus which Barbara Tagg directed in Saranac Lake for approximately 20 years at the Adirondack Festival of American Music in Saranac Lake, NY. She has been a summer resident of the Adirondacks since she was a child and is nationally and internationally recognized for her work in the choral field. As founder and artistic director of the Syracuse Children’s Chorus for 30 years, she was a national leader in the development of the American children’s choir movement, and her choirs have sung across the US, in Canada, the Far East, and Europe. The former Syracuse University music education faculty member and Women’s Choir conductor is currently Florida Chair of Women’s Choirs for the American Choral Directors Association, active on two committees for Chorus America, and judges choir festivals for WorldStrides. Author of Before the Singing, published by Oxford University Press, and numerous articles, Dr. Tagg is known for her commitment to quality music, excellence in singing, and diverse repertoire. This summer’s program will be a tribute to the rich history of summer music in Saranac Lake.

Homeschool History Day at Mt Van Hoevenberg, June 2, 2023

Join us for Homeschool History Day on Friday, June 2, 2023 10am-3:30pm at Mt. Van Hoevenberg in Lake Placid.

It is very important to RSVP for this event so parents know how many treasure items to bring!
RSVP: sunitahalasz@gmail.com

FOR THE MORNING PRESENTATIONS:
We will start the day at 10am in the main lodge for student oral presentations. This is VERY informal and is for ALL AGES.

Students dress up as a character or thing from history that they have researched. For instance, in the past students have been a famous or inspiring person, a family relative, an era in history, a droplet of water, and even an erupting Mt. St. Helens!

If they feel comfortable, students can give a speech on their own. If they would like assistance from a parent or sibling to present with them, that is totally fine! Many parents or guardians have interviewed their students so that the student doesn’t have to give a whole speech, but can just answer questions with a trusted adults standing nearby. One time, a mom read a short picture book about the historical topic her student chose while the student stood nearby in costume. Another time, 4 siblings presented a topic together. So, this is totally a no-pressure thing and just a chance for kids to have fun sharing what they have learned.

POTLUCK LUNCH
Bring a dish to share for our lunch break. I will find out more details about if there is a fridge, a microwave, or outlets that we can use and I will report back. Bring your own plates, silverware, and water bottle.

AFTERNOON LEARNING AND TREASURE HUNT
We will learn from ORDA staff about the history of sliding sports in the Olympics. We will visit the newly renovated Lake Placid Olympic Museum. More specific and exciting details coming soon!

TREASURE BAGS
At the end of the day, kids will put clues together of all the things they have learned from ORDA and the clues will lead them to a “treasure bag” for each of them with a small item contributed by participating families. NO WORRIES if you aren’t able to contribute an item or if you forget!!

Small things like erasers, stickers, pencils, bookmarks, etc. are some of the things that have gone into the treasure bags in previous years.

If you bring treasure items (and again, there is NO PRESSURE to do so), hand them in at the beginning of the day when we meet at the main lodge and they will get sorted into a bag for each child to find at the end of the day.

We will likely be done around 3:30pm.

It is very important to RSVP for this event so parents know how many treasure items to bring!

Homeschool Art Show and Science Fair June 16, 2023

The annual Homeschool Art Show and Science Fair will take place June 16, 2023 from 2-5pm in the basement of the Saranac Lake Free Library.

The Art Show theme is “Junk to Funk” and if you haven’t participated in Joy’s Tuesday Art Classes yet, that’s a great way to create a piece for the show. You can also create a piece on your own. Read more details about “Junk to Funk” here, including details about the June 1st deadline to submit your pieces: https://nch.home.blog/2023/03/25/homeschool-junk-to-funk-art-show/

The Science Fair is a chance for students (and parents!) to explore any topic and do an informal show-and-tell to the group.

Both the Art Show and Science Fair are non-competitive, fun, all-ages events. Even parents are allowed to do projects and display them! If your student doesn’t want to do a art or science project and would rather just come and observe, that is totally fine.

Feel free to bring a healthy snack to share.

Feel free to invite your family and friends!
