Is your homeschool student curious about nature? Do they enjoy spending time outside? If so join two ADK naturalists as we explore the different ecosystems at ADK’s Cascade Welcome Center. This morning of hands-on, student led, discovery will take us in search of the unique plants and animals that live there. Through games and other activities students will learn how to identify local species while comparing different ecosystems.
Please make sure your student is prepared to spend the whole program outside. Parents and guardians are required to stay on site during the program and are welcome to join the group if interested. Restrooms and wifi are available in the Welcome Center for the duration of the program.
Parents and guardians should plan on meeting with instructors at ADK’s Cascade Welcome Center at 9:30am, located at 4833 Cascade Rd, Lake Placid, NY 12946. The course will run until approximately 12:30pm.
Audience: Open to anyone who works with K-12 – formal teachers, educators, home-school, and education/environment-oriented college students/early career – we would love to have you!
Join the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and The Wild Center to discover how you can use nearby nature to engage your students in fun, hands-on learning experiences. This single-day conference is the opportunity to explore nature-based education with organizations and educators that help make the Adirondacks a great place to teach and learn. Nurture the needs of your classroom by selecting from a variety of sessions, both indoors and outdoors, that will give you lesson plans, great ideas, and practical information that will boost your ability to use nature as a great tool for multidisciplinary learning.
Educators can receive 8 contact hours of CTLEs for attending the full conference.
The 37th annual Environmental Field Days is geared toward 5th & 6th grade students but all ages are welcome. To give you a quick overview of how the day works we have about 10 stations set up throughout the fairgrounds. Student/ adults are spilt into groups prior to the event. They rotate through each station throughout the day, about 10-13 minutes at each stop. Examples of topics we have planned for so far are soil science, water erosion, horticulture, leave no trace, maple and more. If anyone is interested in joining us we invite them to register at the link below.
Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions.
Environmental Field Days will be held on Tuesday May 16th and Wednesday May 17th, 2023 at the Essex County Fairgrounds in Westport. The Fairground location provides cover in the event of inclement weather. There is no rain date scheduled.
Busses plan to arrive by 9:00 a.m. Students need to be at their first station at 9:30 a.m. sharp. We will provide a short orientation with the teachers & chaperones on your bus before you escort the students to their first station. As in the past, students will spend roughly 10 minutes at each station.
The program ends at 12:40 pm and the students return to their busses.
This program is designed specifically for 5th & 6th graders. However, schools may bring other age/grade students if they wish. Homeschooled students and local organizations are welcome & encouraged to attend.
