Homeschool Drop-In at Lake Placid Library Jan 5

Dear Homeschool Families,

Happy 2023! We’ll begin this year with our typical Homeschool Thursday Drop-In session on January 5th, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. During this session, stations will focus on telling time (calendars, clocks, timelines, etc.).

Homeschool Thursdays are geared for children in grades K-6, but other ages are welcome. Free parking is available in the St. Eustace Church lot – just leave a note on your dashboard indicating you are at a Homeschool Thursday library event. As always, happy reading!

Homeschool ski and snowshoe program starts Jan 3 at PS VIC

The Paul Smith’s VIC is open tomorrow, Tuesday Jan 3rd for the first Homeschool Cross-Country Ski and Snowshoe day. They actually have snow, even though it is kind of boney at the moment. There is also a kicksled to play around with, which is fun in all conditions. The building is also open and all the facilities are available for homeschooler use. See the description of the weekly event for more info: https://nch.home.blog/2022/12/01/2023-weekly-homeschool-ski-and-snowshoe-program-at-the-paul-smiths-college-vic/

Current Events Survey for future essay contest

The organizer asked me to remind people that the deadline of this survey is coming up on Jan 15, 2023.

_______________

Let NYNPA know what current events topics you’d be interested in writing a contest essay about at this survey link: https://tinyurl.com/CurrentEventsSurvey2023LawDay

See below for more info and who to contact with questions.

_______________

Please spread the word among the members of the North Country Homeschoolers.

As part of a larger educational project associated with Law Day 2023, the News Media Literacy program of the New York Newspapers Foundation/New York News Publishers Association is surveying middle school and high school students to rank current event topics to assess what is most important to them. The American Bar Association’s Law Day theme for 2023 is Cornerstones of Democracy: Civics, Civility and Collaboration.

An essay contest will be created based on the topics most selected. The essay question and rubric will be pushed out through these same channels.  This contest is offering a prize for the top entries. The winning entries would be shared with all member newspapers of the New York News Publishers Association (NYNPA) for those publications to publish in print or online. Additional curriculum materials based on the theme will be created and shared through member newspapers and on the NYNPA website (www.nynpa.com/nie.html).

Here is a link to the Google form we’re using for the survey – https://tinyurl.com/CurrentEventsSurvey2023LawDay  If necessary, you may make a copy of the survey and provide a summary response (Google sheet) for your school/home/class. Please note: We will have no way to access who may wish to enter the follow-up essay contest without names and email addresses.

Deadline for Response: We need all input – summary submissions or individual responses – by the end of the day, Monday, Jan. 15, 2023.

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach me via this email or at lawdaynynpa@gmail.com or call 518-265-6201.
