Youth Sliding Competitions in March at Mt Van Hoevenberg, cheering crowds needed!

ORDA wants the homeschoolers to know: Next week there is Junior Luge leading up to Jr. Championships and Youth Olympic Games for Bobsled and Skeleton. The organizers would love to have local middle schooler/high schoolers come and cheer on their contemporaries and learn about the potentials to get involved in the sports. https://orda.org/2023/02/28/march-2023-sliding-events/

Schedule info from ORDA:

-Youth Olympics qualifying runs slide from 1:30 – 4:30 Wednesday- Sunday (3/8 – 3/12) starting today.

-We have the runs viewable in the café’ or you can walk up ‘the Heart’ of the track.

-They would be starting at Start 4 which is the ½ mile start.

-March 14th and 15th (9-12) are the actual races.

Homeschool Music Jam on Tuesday 3/7 at the VIC after Homeschool XC Ski Day!

Thanks to the great idea of one of the awesome kids who comes to the VIC on Tuesdays, we have permission to use the auditorium for a Homeschool Music Jam! Kids (and parents!) can bring an instrument, even if it’s just their clapping hands, and we’ll make music after we ski.

Lake Placid Library Homeschool Program Feb 9

Our next Homeschool Thursday program will be a family drop-in on Thursday, February 9th from 10-2 p.m. at which stations will highlight books by Black authors and illustrators in celebration of Black History Month. We’ll also have materials available for children to create Valentine’s Day cards. There will be no Homeschool Thursday program the last week of February due to vacation week for many schools.

Homeschool Thursdays are geared for children in grades K-6, but other ages are welcome. Free parking is available in the St. Eustace Church lot – just leave a note on your dashboard indicating you are at a Homeschool Thursday library event. As always, happy reading!

Adirondack Center for Writing “Wild Words Teen Writing Anthology” deadline coming up

The March 10, 2023 deadline for the Adirondack Center for Writing’s Wild Words Teen Writing Anthology is quickly approaching! We appreciate you sharing this information with teen writers in your community.

Attached to this post are worksheets that you’re welcome to distribute. We’re also holding an in-person teen writing event on Friday, March 3rd (one week before the deadline) in Saranac Lake. I know that it’s not always possible to come to events based in Saranac Lake, so I am attaching the “tip sheet” we will have there for teens in case you want to hold your own last minute submission session.

We always welcome requests for classroom and organization visits. Please start by completing this form to get the conversation started. We will reach out to you to figure out the details.

Thanks for helping to spread the word and make our first teen writing anthology a success! Save the date for our April 22, 2023 launch event.

Sincerely,

Erin Dorney

Visiting Writer, ACW

NEW Homeschool Co-op

Hi everyone! We are going to be starting an elementary homeschool co-op, in Saranac Lake. I am Kristine, a local homeschool mom (this is our 4th year homeschooling and my oldest is in 3rd grade). We moved back to the area in June 2021. I have a BS in Integrated Science for Secondary Education/Biology, and a Masters in Health Science. I taught middle school (7/8) math and science for 6 years, and was a university adjunct instructor for the honors college and health science department for 5 years. I love homeschooling, and am excited about this opportunity! We have a couple other potential instructors that have backgrounds in Art, History, Computer Technology/Media, and PE. We hope to continue to increase our scope as we grow!!

For this semester we will be meeting on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month (February – May), starting on Wednesday, February 1, 2023. Anyone is welcome of course, however at this time the target age range for the activities will be 1st-5th grade, but older and younger siblings are welcome to come as well. If there is interest for classes/babysitting for littles OR more advaned options for middle and high school grades, we can definitely add to the offerings in the future.

Meet-ups will include interactive classes with a focus on STEAM activities, integrated with PE (gym/field day), History, and Language Arts. We will also include plenty of time to socialize and get to know other homeschool kids/parents/families in the area!

The dates for 2023 will be as follows:

February 1

February 15

March 1

March 15

April 5

April 19

May 3

May 17

We will be meeting in the community center (1st floor) of the church located at 44 St Bernard Street in Saranac Lake (accessible from the main street parking lot, across from ArtRise). We will have a sign by the entrance very soon. Doors will open at 9:30am, and classes/activities will run from 10am-12pm, lunch break from 12:00-12:45-ish (full kitchen available), and then play time/socialization/games from 12:45ish until 2:00pm.

We are still figuring out how to handle costs for supplies, but we will keep everyone in the loop as we move forward.
