Newspaper Writing Contest

The Adirondack Daily Enterprise and Lake Placid News — based in Saranac Lake — are sponsoring a Biography/Personal Profile Writing Contest for students in grades 4 through 12.

The contest is open to students in the newspapers’ readership area — those who are homeschooled or who attend the following districts and schools: AuSable Valley Central, Keene Central, Lake Placid Central, Saranac Lake Central, Tupper Lake Central, North Country School, Northwood School and St. Bernard’s School.

The submission deadline is Friday, March 29. Winning entries will be selected by our judges in April, the contest will culminate in a celebration reading in May (date and venue TBA) and winning entries will be published in both newspapers.

Posted below are Contest Rules; a guide on how to write a Biography/Personal Profile; and information about our Next Generation Newsroom program, which was designed to create educational pathways for local students to become professional journalists.

We chose the Biography/Personal Profile for our spring 2024 writing contest because both newspapers routinely publish these types of stories that highlight people from our communities. The subject of these profiles must be a living person.

Please share this packet with your homeschooling community and contact me if you have any questions.

Thank you.

Beyond Dams and Lodges Beaver Talk

Beyond Dams and Lodges with
naturalist and author David Hall

Thursday, February 22  |  4 – 5 PM in the Flammer Theater
included with Wild Center Admission

After spending hundreds of hours observing his resident beavers, Dave Hall, naturalist and author, has gained unique insight into their daily habits. This lecture will go well beyond dams, lodges and bark to take a rare look into the lives of three very special beavers, Merle, Apple and Amik. Listeners can look forward to learning skills and gaining perspectives that can be utilized to enrich experiences with all types of wildlife.

Dave is the founder of Primitive Pursuits, a youth-focused nature awareness program offered in partnership with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Tompkins County, New York. He has worked as a naturalist and guide in Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York and has served as an instructor with the Adirondack Mountain Club, the State University of New York at Cortland, Cornell Outdoor Education, and Ithaca College. Dave’s newest book, The Naturalist’s Guide: A Field Guide to Observing and Understanding Wildlife was released on September 1, 2022. He also is co-author of Winter in the Wilderness: A Field Guide to Primitive Survival Skills and lives in Willseyville, New York, with his family and two dogs.

This lecture is included in the cost of general admission. No Registration (space is limited 165 seats). General admission tickets can be purchased online here: https://wildcenter.ticketapp.org/portal/product/8

Lake Placid Public Library Homeschool Program 2/1/24

Dear Homeschool Families,

Please join us on Thursday, February 1st at 10:00 a.m. for an exploration of biographies and autobiographies through a read aloud, discussion, and extension activities. Special guests from Northwood School will help students draw portraits and self-portraits to accompany their writing. Please bring a photo of your child(ren) or a picture of a person your child is interested in writing about to help with this drawing station. Don’t worry if they’re just on your phone, as we can quickly print copies.

Please rsvp to librarian@lakeplacidlibrary.org or 518-523-3200 if you know you are attending to help with set-up needs. As always, happy reading!
