37th Annual Environmental Field Days 5/16 & 5/17 in Westport

The 37th annual Environmental Field Days is geared toward 5th & 6th grade students but all ages are welcome. To give you a quick overview of how the day works we have about 10 stations set up throughout the fairgrounds. Student/ adults are spilt into groups prior to the event. They rotate through each station throughout the day, about 10-13 minutes at each stop. Examples of topics we have planned for so far are soil science, water erosion, horticulture, leave no trace, maple and more. Environmental Field Days will be held on Tuesday May 16th and Wednesday May 17th, 2023 at the Essex County Fairgrounds in Westport. The Fairground location provides cover in the event of inclement weather. There is no rain date scheduled.

Busses plan to arrive by 9:00 a.m. Students need to be at their first station at 9:30 a.m. sharp. We will provide a short orientation with the teachers & chaperones on your bus before you escort the students to their first station. As in the past, students will spend roughly 10 minutes at each station.

The program ends at 12:40 pm and the students return to their busses.

This program is designed specifically for 5th & 6th graders. However, schools may bring other age/grade students if they wish. Homeschooled students and local organizations are welcome & encouraged to attend. Schools are responsible for chaperoning, instructors will be busy with their presentation and will not be responsible for disciplining students.

Please RSVP using the online registration before April 28th. You have the option to choose a day that works best for you in the registration. Lake Placid Library Homeschool Thursday 3/30/23

Dear Homeschool Families,

We will DESIGN GAMES at this week’s Homeschool Thursday program on 3/30/23. It will begin at 10:00 a.m. with a read-aloud and discussion, followed by hands-on activities to complete at the library or take home.

Homeschool Thursdays are geared for children in grades K-6, but other ages are welcome. Free parking is available in the St. Eustace Church lot – just leave a note on your dashboard indicating you are at a Homeschool Thursday library event. As always, happy reading!

Law Day 2023 Essay Contest – Deadline Extended to Mon, April 17

To give students more time to complete research and submit entries – the deadline has been extended to Monday, April 17. 

The essay contest is focused on the topic of social justice and equal rights and ties in accurate news access and the law.  

Essay Prompt: Explain how the U.S. Constitution supports equal rights and social justice in our country. What role do civics, civility and collaboration, and access to accurate sources of news and information play? 

Click here to access the contest prompt and criteria and here for the contest rubric. There is a $200 award for the best entry per geographic area of New York State – Long Island, New York City, Eastern New York, Central New York and Western New York. Please note, winning entries could be published (in print or online) in NYNPA member newspapers with attribution (Name and Town of the student).

Winners will be strongly encouraged to participate in a public forum to share their entries and take part in a moderated student virtual discussion panel sometime in late April or early May. If unavailable for the panel discussion, arrangements will be made to obtain a pre-recorded segment to be aired during the live event. (Details TBD).  

Additional curriculum materials based on the 2023 theme of Law Day – “Cornerstones of Democracy: Civics, Civility and Collaboration” – will be created and shared through member newspapers and on the NYNPA website (www.nynpa.com/nie.html).

BluSeed Art Show “Aunt Matilda’s Americana” Homeschool Day

The current art exhibit at BluSeed has been described as “fun” and “accessible” (though please read the article to decide if it is appropriate for your family). On the day of the next Homeschool Dollar Days in April (TUESDAY, APRIL 4, 2023 AT 2 PM – 6 PM), BluSeed invites homeschoolers to visit the exhibit “Aunt Matilda’s Americana” by artist Daniel Bruce.

Homeschool “JUNK TO FUNK” art show

The Saranac Lake Free Library is inviting all homeschoolers in the region of the Clinton-Essex-Franklin Library System to create art pieces for a special “Junk to Funk” art show where every piece will be made of recycled/reused materials.

Our goal is to bring attention to the waste we create as individuals hoping it will help change our outlook and attitude toward Junk!

June is also Paddle Month in Saranac Lake, so any creation linked to water and watersports is encouraged!

When: Pieces will be on display from June 05-July 08, **with a reception party on June 16 from 3-5pm!

All pieces must be brought to the Saranac Lake Free Library by Thursday, June 1st, 2023.

Dewey Mountain Homeschool XC Ski Day – don’t come if the roads are too snowy!!

Lots of snow in the forecast for tomorrow (3/14/23) for Saranac Lake. The current total overnight and throughout the day is 9″. Please do not drive to Dewey Mountain in Saranac Lake if the conditions are bad. We can always have Pi Day celebrations another day! My family will most likely still go to Dewey at 10am, but our drive is only a couple miles to get there. If you have to drive any distance and the conditions do turn out to be bad, please do not come.
